_By Jed Medina and Karen Essex, February 2004
In England, where fashion is cutting edge, where the clubs are elevated to the extreme and the term 'underground' has a wicked, 'dangerous' meaning, there resides top male model David Lindwall.

With a Dior Homme, Paul Smith and a Moschino campaigns to his belt, a reputation as a fashion designer with uncompromising talent, a growing presence in London's club scene and the public's growing perception of a man who says what he means, David Lindwall is a man waiting for his turn to be heard and understood.

With the launch of his website's latest version,
Fashion is a Freedom Crime, David showcase some of his designs and allow his viewers just a hint of what he feels strongly about.

ModelWatch breaks new grounds by becoming the first to feature David Lindwall- the model, the designer, the man.

Karen: The London Fashion scene is the most independent and uncompromising compared to other fashion capitals, what's your personal views and impressions of Fashion as a Londoner. What should fashion be? What it should not be?

David: I find it hard to describe what fashion should be, I can only answer for myself and what I feel about fashion.

Fashion for me is a way of expressing myself, some people write a diary and I make clothes that speaks for what I feel.

That changes along the road, and that's why I make new collections, I always got my sketchbook with me if I come up with something new. I mean London is great for example, loads of exhibitions and stuff to get inspiration from. For a new collection I always go somewhere and just rest my brain for a while and then come back and just do it.

Well, what fashion shouldn't be, I mean I find some fashion so bad but it's their problem and not mine, I just feel sorry for people buying the shit.

Jed: You modeled for Dior, a design House that also won't allow itself to be dictated by trends, how did this project change your impressions of fashion or was it influential in having you do designs on your own?

David: I mean working with Hedi (Slimane) was surely a boost for designing my own stuff, when I got there, I mean I had just been modeling halftime, while working in shit jobs on the side, and when I came to Paris and saw the clothes, that's when I realized that, hmm this is good designs.

Before, everything I bought in shops I had to customize it to make it fit and look the way I wanted. It was just a boost to see well-designed clothes.

Jed: Tell us the story behind the Dior campaign and shooting with Richard Avedon.

David: Not official ->(Yeah a long flight to New York, my first time in the States, I mean Oh, that morning was just a nightmare, I hope none of my agencies reads this, ah well, I woke up had packed my stuff and got to the airport, In the checkin line I realize, Oh motherfu--, I ain't got my passport!

So yeah I missed 4 flights in a row. Of course I called my agency and said my flight was delayed but yeah I spent 7 hours on Heathrow airport waiting for my mate to arrive with my passport, but I made it in the end, a sweet little girl who was working for the air company gave me a boarding pass, so I was fine in the end.

Mr. Avedon was a cool fox for sure and yeah a shame hmmm well a friend of mine turned up too late, like 4 hours too late and missed it but hey that's fashion.

Well the story is Hedi liked me after the show and booked me (I guess).

Jed: Tell us how you began designing clothes? Who are you designing for?

David: I've been customizing my clothes since I was 14 or something, I don't know my body is just not made for high fashion clothes. And one day I just got bored, someone need to show the world something good and creative. I'm not saying there are no good designers out there, I just wanted to add my input on fashion cause I felt I had something to give.

My designs are for a very narrow fashion crowd I guess, and it makes me happy to see that's it's actually selling.

But I'm shit on promoting myself so this far it's just one-off's (one existing piece of each design) which I'm quite happy with.

I don't wanna go big, I'm just not good enough, I know what I want it to look like, but since I haven't studied in some dull "FASHION-school" I can't design everything I sketch, but hmm if I had money I'd just get someone to do it for me like the big designers.
