_By Jed Medina, February 2004
He first came into prominence via the Burberry campaign. Shot by the famed photographer Mario Testino, he shared the limelight with supermodel Kate Moss.

He then went on to do Lagerfeld and again with Testino, this time for a much-coveted photoshoots for L'Uomo Vogue. He was the magazine's cover.

In a span of less than a year, he had worked with designers such as Marc Jacobs, Vivienne Westwood, Calvin Klein, Valentino, and Gucci, among others.

With those soulful and oh-so expressive eyes, unmistakable charm, the talent to project well for the cameras and ability to alter his very looks, Milan is the epitome of today's male model ideal.

We at ModelWatch have never been this excited about doing a profile of an international male model. It is also noteworthy that with Milan's Interview, we shall be featuring the agency that discovered him!

ModelWatch is thrilled to launch the profile of one male model who is destined to go places!

Jed: Your name Milan is very now. It sounded different yet there is a certain familiarity to it. Is there a concept behind the name that people in the Industry have known you for?

Milan: So many people ask me "Are you Italian? Where you conceived in Italy?? Milan is a Czech name. My father is from the Czech town-Brno- the same town as the famous writer 'Milan Kundera'. My father loved the book "The Unbearable Lightness of Being"; hence, I was named after him. I also have an uncle named Milan.

Jed: Tell us about your very first modeling experience. What was it like, where was it held, and how were you discovered?

Milan: My very first modeling job was in New York City; I was sixteen at the time. Someone had screwed up and I ended up staying in a hostel in Harlem. It was to shoot an editorial for L'Uomo Vogue. The client felt so bad that on my second night there they put me up in a bed and breakfast on 23rd. I had no problem staying in Harlem-but me being 16-my Mom freaked out a bit.

I was "discovered" by Norwayne- my brother Jeno was already a model with NAM. My mom would always say to Norwayne "you should meet Milan too?, but I was only fifteen at the time and that was too young. My brother did a Fashion show in Toronto and I went to watch. Norwayne spotted me there- you can probably figure out the rest.

Jed: Tell us about some of the modeling stints you have done that really made you feel good being a model, perhaps you could list down some of your favorite modeling assignments so far?

Milan: The Burberry campaign with Kate Moss and under the guidance of Mario Testino; -this was one of the first jobs I did. To be honest I didn't know anything about the fashion industry. I had no clue who Mario Testino was, I knew the name Kate Moss- but believe it or not I couldn't put a face to it. I was pretty nervous about getting in front of the camera cause it was maybe my third time. But Mario was very good at making me feel comfortable. I look like a friggin girl in that photo though!!! ha!ha!

The Lagerfeld modeling gig; -Again, I had no clue who Lagerfeld was but when I did the job I knew he was someone important cause he had a waiter by his side with a glass of wine the entire time he was taking pictures. Until I could finally remember his name, I would tell people I did a job for this guy with white hair, sunglasses and a fan. Obviously I know who he is now, that was 2 and a half years ago, when I had just started out.

The L'Uomo Vogue cover and photoshoots; -this was one of my favourite jobs. Paolo Roversi is definitely one of my favourite photographers in the world and not just from ones that I've worked with. I do love working with him though. He creates such a relaxed environment, and the way he uses the light, and that huge, old Polaroid camera that he uses. When I did the shoot I was told it was just going to be an editorial inside. It was really funny actually; there were these two girls at my high school (a little off topic) that didn't believe me that I was a model. I had heard that the L'Uomo Vogue had come out, but no one told me I was on the cover. Well, I went in to buy it with these two girls, when they saw me on the cover, wearing this fur coat and designer jeans, - the look on their faces!!! The fact that it cost $90 Canadian was the icing on the cake!!
